Downtown Charleston’s peninsula has a rich history that starts at the harbor and extends throughout the city. Did you know that Charleston Harbor has played a significant role in the growth over the years? Charleston Harbor has truly seen it all, from being a hub for trading to being the center of major war events. In this blog, we will run through the history of Charleston Harbor and all it has contributed to the city beyond it.

Establishment:

English settlers first used the harbor in 1670 after establishing “Charles Town” off the Ashley River. The name Charles Town came from King Charles II. This location became undesirable due to its location, so they moved on to the peninsula known as “Oyster Point.” Due to this location’s proximity to the natural harbor, they developed a city that became used for trade. As the port city began to prosper due to all the trade opportunities, it quickly became a target for pirates and foreign enemies.

A look into past Conflicts:

1706 Spanish and French forces attacked the city but were held off by the Charles Town Malicia. Fort Johnson on James Island was built in 1708 the main colonial fortification. In 1718, the pirate Blackbeard famously laid siege on the harbor looking for medicine. During the American Revolution, the Charleston Harbor became a major part of the events taking place. Defending James Island was Fort Johnson, and on the opposite side, the Palmetto Fort was under construction at Sullivans Island when it was attacked. Following the Revolutionary War, the Harbor continued providing wealth to the Charlestonians. Many years later, Charleston Harbor was where the Civil War began, and troops occupied Fort Sumter and Fort Johnson.
